Life pushed me around for most of my 93 years of age, and as a consequence, my house is full of objects and books I bought all over the place.
They decorate my modest house and remind me daily of many rich cultures, places and people.
One characteristic common to all those decorative objects is that no one is a religious symbol.
Not because I don’t have them!
I bought several because I am interested in all aspects of those cultures, including religions, of which those objects and books represent values and messages well.
I am a secular person, and knowing that the religious items I have are significant to believers, I don’t treat them as decorative objects, even if some of them are beautiful and artistic objects.
I do that out of respect.
Having said that, a few days ago, I read that the Republican Campaign had started offering a Bible, in the King James version, for US59.95 for fundraising purposes.
For a moment, I couldn’t believe what I was reading.
The ‘God Bless the U.S.A. Bible” has the U.S. flag on its leather cover and includes the texts of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution before amendments, the Bill of Rights, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the chorus of Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA” in Greenwood’s handwriting.
I asked myself what the reaction of Christians and Jews would be.
So far, I have seen no reaction.
The only relevant discussion has been about the fact that Trump’s Bible was printed in China, straight on the face of the official program of the republican nominee to combat Chinese imports.
Where are the Catholics and the Evangelicals that support Donald Trump?
Well, they repeatedly confirm to everybody who listens to them that they will vote for him!
But are they so blinded not to realize the enormity of the insult to their beliefs that Trump’s Bible merchandising represents?
Do they remember that Jesus kicked the merchants out of the Temple?
